Exploring a Shared Island Approach Online Event - 9 June 11am

Cross Border Ireland 2

This event is the first of a series of online panels exploring a shared island approach to reducing inequality, understanding social change, and promoting social inclusion. The Taoiseach launched the series last month.

This first panel will focus on economic inequality and will be held online June 9 from 11-12.

The chair of the session will be Professor Niamh Hourigan (Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick) and the panelists

  • Professors Colin Coulter (Maynooth University)
  • Christopher McCrudden (Queen's University, Belfast)

A third panelist is to be confirmed.

The panelists will discuss how governments in RoI and NI can promote social mobility, overcome disadvantages exacerbated because of the pandemic, and reduce the cost of living for lower middle income and low income households.

  • Should policy adhere to a rights-based approach that in turn has implications for access to public services, focus on the living wage, and/or facilitate collective bargaining?
  • Or, do both governments need to concentrate more on economic growth, especially in traditionally low wage sectors like hospitality?
  • How can cross-border cooperation inform effective policymaking regarding inequality?

Zoom access details will be sent closer to the event date
