MIGRANT KEY WORKERS AND SOCIAL COHESION IN EUROPE

24 February 2022

The Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS) and TASC (Think tank for Action on Social Change) are pleased to present their latest study on “Migrant key workers and social cohesion in Europe”, which will investigate working and living conditions of migrants employed in the agricultural and care sectors in Europe, assess how these conditions impact on the migrants’ daily life and on their capability to partake in community life.

In Ireland, we have relied upon  a low-paid migrant workforce largely excluded from civic, social and political life in the country to take care of our children and older relatives and help maintain our food supply. This report argues for rethinking integration as an individual process of adaptation to the new country. Instead, we need to consider how better paid migrant workers can participate in Irish society.

The report also considers to what extent improper legislation hinders rather than facilitates migrants’ inclusion.
