Cruinniú na Cásca: Insights into Industry

This series of four discussions on construction, transport, fishing and hospitality is organised in conjunction with TASC and SIPTU, which organises workers in these sectors. The discussions will take place in SIPTU, Liberty Hall, commencing at 11am on Easter Monday.

In 2016 TASC published a report on working conditions in Ireland titled Enforced Flexibility? Working in Ireland Today.

Construction 11.00-12.00

In this discussion on the construction industry, a panel of workers, industry experts and academics will discuss their experience of the sector, bogus self-employment, agency work, the tax system, safety and solutions.

Moderated by Conor Brophy of RTÉ, speakers include two workers from the industry, Prof James Wickham of TASC and Prof Michael Doherty, Professor of Law at Maynooth University.

Transport 12.30-1.30

In this discussion on the transport industry, a panel of workers, industry experts and academics will discuss their experience of the sector, unsocial hours, the role of unions in the sector and solutions for its success.

Moderated by Conor Brophy of RTÉ, speakers include two workers from the industry, Prof James Wickham of TASC and Mark Gleeson of Rail Users Ireland.

Fishing 2.00-3.00

In this discussion on the fishing industry, a panel of workers, industry experts and academics will discuss their experience of the sector, sourcing of labour, trafficking of workers, safety issues and possible solutions and models for fishing in Ireland.

Moderated by Conor Brophy of RTÉ, speakers include two workers from the industry, Ken Fleming (International Transport Workers’ Federation Coordinator) and Padraig Yeates.

Cruinniú na Cásca

Cruinniú na Cásca, a Creative Ireland initiative presented by RTÉ is a free public event which will take place in towns and cities across Ireland, on Easter Monday with a special large-scale event in Dublin.

Four zones in Dublin city centre, from 11am – 6pm, will celebrate contemporary Irish culture and creativity through a rich variety of live music and dance, coding, art and music workshops, talks and tastings, readings and screenings, special events and more.

RTÉ will broadcast live from Cruinniú na Cásca zones throughout the day across RTÉ Radio 1, RTÉ 2fm and RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta, with regular updates on television and online.

As part of the all-of-Government Creative Ireland Programme, local authorities around the country will host their own free family friendly Cruinniú na Cásca initiatives in their own counties.
